  • Hawley Harvey Crippen, better known as Doctor Crippen, the first person arrested with the aid of wireless telegraphy, was sentenced to death, for the murder of his wife, today in 1910
  • George Blake, the former British spy who worked as a double agent for the Soviet Union, escaped from prison in London today in 1966, he returned to the Soviet Union to live as a free man
  • Chandrayaan-1, the first Indian lunar probe, was launched today in 2008, it would make India the 5th country to land a spacecraft on the Moon

  • The full BBC Symphony Orchestra gave its first concert today in 1930
  • The first NFL game was televised today in 1939 on the NBC network, it was between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Philadelphia Eagles
  • The rivalry of the French racing driver Alain Prost and the Brazilian Ayrton Senna came to a head today in 1989 at the Japanese Grand Prix, they collided on lap 46 at the final chicane, Prost abandoned his car and Senna was later disqualified
